Risperidone, or as it’s more commonly known, Risperdal, received Food and Drug Administration approval back in 1993. The drug is an antipsychotic approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, and there was a time when it was one of the most profitable drugs for its maker, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and parent company Johnson & Johnson.
The makers of the medication were not content to have the drugs only available to schizophrenic patients. The pharmaceutical giant repeatedly attempted to gain expanded approval for the treatment of dementia in older individuals. They also sought approval for treatment of children in 2006.
Risperdal® is an atypical antipsychotic medication many times administered to children for a variety of disorders including bipolar disorder, autism, irritability, aggression and Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Some of these uses are “off-label,” and never approved by the FDA for use with children. Use of Risperdal® has been linked to breast growth in adolescent boys, also known as “gynecomastia.” Despite this condition, the company still aggressively promoted the use of their drug with children.
This past November, the federal government reached a settlement with Johnson & Johnson that will find the company paying $2.2 billion, $1.72 billion of which is being earmarked for civil fines. This particular settlement will supersede ongoing civil actions that have been brought against Johnson & Johnson at the state level (some of which have already led to their own heavy fines). Young men and adolescent boys who suffered serious side effects related to the drug should now be able to gain compensation for their injuries.
