Reglan is a drug that is typically prescribed for treatment of acid reflux desease. It’s generic equivalent is Metoclopramide. Reglan has been linked to a condition called Tardive Dyskinesia, a neurological disorder which is characterized by involuntary movements. Usually, these movements involve the face (including the tongue and mouth) and can sometimes involve movements in arms or legs. There have been at least two studies that show long-term use of Reglan is linked to Tardive Dyskinesia in almost 30% of those studied.
The FDA has issued a “Black Box Warning” to warn people of these serious side effects. Reglan is still on the market, but is recommended only for short term use. As of February 2009, doctors have been advised to avoid prescribing Reglan for long term use in all but rare cases.
Reglan has also been associated with Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), which is usually related to antipsychotic drugs. NMS is a serious syndrome that results in dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which is the part of the nervous system that controls and regulates heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and body temperature.
Symptoms of NMS can include:
Extremely high body temperature (101º-108º F)
Heavy sweating
Fast or irregular heart rate
Rapidly fluctuating blood pressure
Unconciousness
Rigid or stiff muscles
Catatonia (coma)
UPDATE: There have been reports of children developing movement disorders after the mother was taking Reglan while pregnant or breastfeeding
