Baxter recalled 9 lots of Heparin in January 2008. The recall was in response to 100 reports the company received about patients suffering from apparent allergic reactions to the blood thinning drug. Baxter International also suspended the manufacture of Heparin until they could determine what was causing the reactions.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Public Health Advisory to warn doctors not to use Baxter Heparin in mid-February 2008. The FDA stated that they had received 350 reports of harmful side effects linked to Baxter Heparin in 2008 alone. Furthermore, the FDA reported that four patients had died after receiving the drug. Nearly all the cases of allergic reactions to Baxter Heparin were by dialysis patients who had received high doses of Heparin over a short time period. The FDA warned doctors who use Baxter Heparin to use the lowest doses possible.
By the end of February, the FDA announced that all of Baxter’s remaining Heparin products would be recalled. As many as 21 deaths could have somehow been linked to the tainted Heparin. Baxter says it held off recalling all lots of the drug so as not to cause a Heparin shortage. The experienced Heparin Recall lawyers of Handler, Henning & Rosenber believe that the Baxter company and the FDA should never have allowed the drug to be used for so long after a problem was discovered. We intend to hold those responsible accountable for their negligence and get those injured by Baxter Heparin the compensation they deserve.
Heparin is a biological blood thinner derived from pig intestines and is used in large doses before surgery or dialysis. There are other blood thinners on the market, but Heparin is used because it works quickly and it’s side effects are usually easy to reverse. Baxter International is the manufacturer of approximately half of the multi-dose Heparin vials in the U.S.
